The three- cushion world cup 1996/6 was the second BWA world cup tournament in the eleventh year of the three-cushion world cup. The tournament took place from November 13 to 16, 1996 in this discipline of carom billiards in Daegu in the Korean province of Gyeongsangbuk-do . It was the second three-cushion World Cup tournament in South Korea.
After two third places, in Halle (Saale) in 1994 and in Antwerp in 1995, the Dutchman Raimond Burgman was able to enter the list of winners of the three-cushion World Cup for the first time. He beat his compatriot Dick Jaspers with 3: 1 sets in the round of 16 and put a significant damper on him in the fight for the overall World Cup. It was Burgman's fourth win over Jaspers in a row. In the final, he defeated the native Korean Sang Chun Lee, who is very popular in South Korea, with a 3-2 set. In the game for third place, the Italian Marco Zanetti prevailed against Torbjörn Blomdahl and took the lead in the overall World Cup.
The Belgian Frédéric Caudron provided the highlight of the tournament . In the round of 16 match against Semih Saygıner , he set a new world record in the individual average. He won the first set 15: 5 in five shots. For movement two and three he only needed two recordings each. He scored 45 points in just nine shots. That results in the new world record average (ED) of 5,000 . This markedly improved the world record set two years ago in Oosterhout von Blomdahl in the Netherlands from 3.214 to the new record. All other best performances of the tournament were also due to Caudron. What is remarkable about this tournament is the fact that in the main field of the last 28 players, nine came from the Netherlands and nine from Korea. This can also be attributed to the UMB World Cup tournaments, as more and more players take part in these tournaments. BWA professionals are not allowed here.
The exact price money could not be determined from the documents. However, as in all BWA World Cup tournaments, it was at least 100,000 DM.
The World Cup tournament was played as an open tournament again. From a pre-qualification with a maximum of 124 participants, 10 participants qualify for the 1/16 finals. The main tournament is played with 28 participants. The first four of the world rankings are set for the round of 16. In future, 20 participants are set. The seeded participants are recruited from the best 14 players in the world rankings (as of September 1, 1995) as well as two national and international wildcards. The whole tournament, with the exception of the small final, is played in the knockout system with three sets of 15 points each. (Press release by BWA.Ghent, January 8, 1994.)
From 1995 onwards there was no more qualification tournament in Spa.
Final round
The tournament tree for the final round is listed below.
The three-cushion World Cup was organized by the founding association, the " Billiards Worldcup Association " (BWA) until 1998 . Disputes between the BWA and the world association Union Mondiale de Billard (UMB) led to parallel tournaments between 1994 and 1997. The UMB / BWA organized the tournament together until the beginning of 1999. Since the dissolution of the BWA in 1999, the UMB has been the sole organizer. From 1988-1991 the UMB did not host any world championships. During this time, the annual overall winner of the World Cup was crowned world champion.
