The three- cushion world cup 2001/2 was the second UMB / BWA world cup tournament in the 16th year of the three-cushion world cup. The tournament took place from June 18 to 23, 2001 in this discipline of carom billiards in Las Vegas . It was the third three-cushion World Cup tournament in Las Vegas.

history

As in 1999, the field of participants at the World Cup tournament in Las Vegas was extremely full. In the fight for the overall World Cup, the audience was mainly interested in the three leaders ( Semih Saygıner , Dick Jaspers and Torbjörn Blomdahl ) in this ranking. All three won their first matches. Blomdahl immediately presented the best tournament performance. Against the very strong playing Martin Horn he played an average of 2,647 and was rewarded by the organizer for this performance with an extra bonus of 1,000 USD. In the second round, Jaspers and Blomdahl continued to play at a very high level and showed that a tournament victory can only be achieved through these two players. The quarter-finals ended Saygıner's hopes. Against Marco Zanetti he had to admit defeat with 1: 3 sets. In the semifinals, Blomdahl had few problems with Zanetti. It was very different for Jaspers. Against Tonny Carlsen he was already 0-2 sets behind. Thanks to his well-known fighting skills, he was still able to win 3-2 sets. In the final, Jaspers was again quickly behind with 0: 2 sets. He then won the third set 15-2. In the fourth set, however, Blomdahl countered with the same set result and took the lead again in the overall World Cup.

Tournament mode

The World Cup tournament was played as an open tournament. From a pre-qualification with a maximum of 144 participants, 12 participants qualify for the 1/16 finals. The main tournament is played with 32 participants. There are 14 participants. The seeded participants are recruited from the best 14 players in the current world rankings. The whole tournament is played in the knockout system with three winning sets of 15 points each. In Las Vegas, 48 preliminary round groups were played with three or two players. The 48 group winners played 12 participants for the main field in two knockout rounds.
