The three- cushion world cup 2016/4 was the fourth UMB / CEB world cup tournament in the 30th year of the three-cushion world cup. It took place from July 18 to 24 at the Pavilhão Dragão Caixa sports complex at the FC Porto stadium in Porto . It was the 13th three-cushion world cup tournament, a form of carom billiards , in Portugal .

history

Right at the start of the knockout round there was a remarkable match. The Turk Tayfun Taşdemir missed nine match points against ex-world champion Choi Sung-won and there was an extension. Here Choi presented nine points. Taşdemir could only counter with two points and was eliminated. The game between Eddy Merckx and Lee Choong-bok was also exciting . The Korean Lee was able to make up a 28:39 deficit. In overtime he was still defeated 1: 2. In the round of 16, Dick Jaspers faced the Vietnamese Ma Minh Cam again. In Ho Chi Minh City he needed extra time to win. Here he won with the closest of all results with 40:39. Torbjörn Blomdahl achieved the same result against the Korean Kim Jyung-kon after the Korean missed several match points. In the quarter-finals, Choi also missed a match point against world number one Frédéric Caudron and lost 39:40. In the game between Jaspers and Daniel Sánchez , the Dutchman missed the opening kick and Sánchez started with eleven points. After five shots it was 33: 2 !. With that the game was of course decided. The final score was 40:18 in 13 shots. The other two matches were also of a very high standard. Nikos Polychronopoulos won against record junior world champion Kim Haeng-jik just 40:38 and Marco Zanetti knocked out Blomdahl 2-1 in extra time. In the final, Polychronopoulos, who reached the final for the third time after 2008 and 2009, and Caudron met. The Belgian won here relatively safely. The Greek lost his third final. Every time a Belgian was his opponent.

Tournament mode

A lot has changed in the tournament mode since 2013. The rate system was abolished because the match time could not be calculated. Matches could last between three and five sets. Good timing was therefore not possible. The game distances were set at 30 points in the pre-qualifying rounds and 40 points in the main qualification and in the knockout games. A tie is possible in the qualifying rounds. In the knockout round, overtime is played in the event of a tie. Each of the two players starts with the initial push. Whoever scores more points wins the match. If there is also a tie in extra time, the kick starts again until a winner is determined. The shot clock was shortened to 40 seconds. Each player can take two extra times per match . This increases the peak time by 40 seconds. There are only two wildcards for the organizer and one each for three of the four associations CPB , ACBC , CEB and ACC in which the World Cup does not take place.

Four qualifying rounds are played. From the last qualifying round, the 12 group winners and the three best runners-up qualify for the final round. The main tournament is played with 32 participants.

In the event of a tie, the following order will be applied:

  1. MP = match points
  2. GD = general average
  3. HS = maximum series

Seeded players and wild cards

The first 12 players in the world rankings and the wildcard players automatically took part as players in the tournament in the knockout round. The first four of the world rankings are placed in positions 1, 16, 8 and 9.
