Anthony Colve or Anthonij Colve was the Dutch military governor of the short-lived colony of Nieuw Nederland from 1673 to 1674 . From a territorial point of view, this roughly corresponds to today's areas of the US states of New York and New Jersey .

Life

Colve's life dates are unknown. What is certain is that he was a Dutch officer. In March 1667 he was involved in the retaking of Suriname from the English . He then became a cadet in Fort Sint-Anna (Saaftinge), a Dutch military school. In 1670 he was stationed as a captain at Fort Lillo. In 1672 he was transferred to Veere . In 1673 the Dutch recaptured the province of New York , which had been lost in 1664, from the English. Their conquests also included what is now the state of New Jersey. These provinces were renamed Nieuw Nederland again . Colve became the first and only governor of the colony, established in 1673. He held this office between September 19, 1673 and February 9, 1674. During this time, New York City was renamed New Orange . The Peace of Westminster in 1674 finally ended Dutch rule in this region. The English took over these areas again and were to keep them until American independence .

After his return to the Netherlands, Colve held various military posts. In 1695 he was last mentioned as the commander of Veere. After that his track is lost.
