Sir Danvers Osborn, 3rd Baronet (born November 17, 1715 in Shefford , Bedfordshire , England , † October 12, 1753 in New York City ) was British Governor of the Province of New York for two days in 1753 .

Life

Danvers Osborn came from an English noble family. When he was a child, he inherited the title of Baronet , of Chicksands in the County of Bedford when his grandfather died in 1720 . In 1740 he married Lady Mary Montagu, who died three years later giving birth to their second son. Danvers Osborn did not overcome her death for the rest of his life. In the following years he led a restless life. At times he lived on the estate of his brother-in-law, the Earl of Halifax , in Northamptonshire . When Charles Edward Stuart started an uprising against the British King George II in 1745 to bring the House of Stuart back to power in London, Osborn raised his own troops. This he commanded himself and led them under the command of the Duke of Cumberland, a son of George II, in the battle against the Stuarts. Between 1747 and 1753 he then sat for the Bedfordshire constituency in the British Parliament. In 1750 Osborn traveled to Nova Scotia for six weeks , where he analyzed the conditions there, including the trade. After his return he brought his findings to the attention of the responsible authorities in London.

In July 1753 Danvers Osborn was appointed the new colonial governor of the province of New York. On October 10, he took office as the successor to George Clinton . He appointed Thomas Pownall as his private secretary. He later became the colonial governor of the Province of Massachusetts Bay. Two days after taking office, Osborn was found dead in the garden of his home. Apparently he committed suicide. There were rumors that he had previously made two failed suicide attempts. The reason for this act was considered to be depression, which went back to the death of his wife in 1743.
