Gerardus Beekman

Gerardus Willemse Beekman (baptized August 17, 1653 on Corlaer's Hook Plantation in what was then the Nieuw Nederland (later the English province of New York ); † October 10, 1723 in New York City ) was the provisional English governor of New York City for a short time in 1710 York.

Life

Nothing is known about the youth and childhood of Geradus Beekman. Later he worked as a doctor. He also owned an estate on the Millstone River in New Jersey . From 1681 he was captain of the militia. He was later promoted to major. In 1691 he supported the Leisler Rebellion . But he was not as radical as Jakob Leisler . He tried to have a soothing effect on the masses. After the fall of Leisler, Beekman was arrested as his supporter and imprisoned for seventeen months before he was pardoned. He continued his career in the militia, where he was promoted to lieutenant colonel in 1700 and a little later to colonel. He was also a member and temporarily chairman of the House of Lords (Council) of the colony. In this capacity he was also acting colonial governor of New York between April 10 and June 14, 1710. He bridged the time between the recall of Richard Ingoldesby and the assumption of office of the new governor Robert Hunter . Geradus Beekman died on October 10, 1723 in New York City.
