The three- cushion world cup 1991/5 was the 5th and last world cup tournament in the sixth year of the three- cushion world cup. It took place from December 21 to 23, 1991 in this discipline of carom billiards in Tokyo . It was the fourth three-cushion World Cup tournament in Japan.
For the last time, the world champion was determined by winning the overall World Cup. This time it was extremely tight and exciting. After four tournaments, three players were still eligible for the title. The first contender for the title was record world champion Raymond Ceulemans with 18 points ahead of Torbjörn Blomdahl and Sang Chun Lee . Ceulemans and Sang Chun Lee had to compete first in the round of 16. Lee was the first to clearly lose 3-0 in three competitive sets against the Austrian Christoph Pilss and was eliminated in the fight for the title. A short time later, Ceulemans failed again, as in Ghent, because of the Dutchman Dick Jaspers . After Blomdahl's victory against Akira Hida from Japan, nothing was decided. Should Blomdahl lose in the quarter-finals, he had to be at least seventh in the overall standings in order to receive the additional points. Whoever loses to the eventual winner in the quarter-finals is fifth and receives 21 points. Whoever loses against the loser in the final becomes Dechster and receives 18 points. Third and fourth places receive 30 and 24 points, respectively. So Blomdahl had to hope after his quarter-final defeat against Marco Zanetti that Zanetti would reach the final. But since Zanetti defeated French Richard Bitalis in the semifinals , Blomdahl was able to celebrate the world title and overall World Cup victory even before the final, as he had the same number of points as Ceulemans with 150 points. But Blomdahl had won two World Cup tournaments in 1991 and could no longer be caught. Jaspers won the final against Zanetti and also got 150 points, which was enough for third place. It was Jaspers' first World Cup victory.
The exact price money could not be determined from the documents. However, as in all BWA World Cup tournaments, it was at least 100,000 DM.
The World Cup tournament was played as an open tournament again. From a pre-qualification with 48 participants, 12 participants qualified for the 1/16 finals and got 6 points for the world rankings. The main tournament was played with 28 participants. The first four of the world rankings were set for the second round. The whole tournament was played in the knockout system with three sets of 15 points each.
Final round
The tournament tree for the final round is listed below.
The three-cushion World Cup was organized by the founding association, the " Billiards Worldcup Association " (BWA) until 1998 . Disputes between the BWA and the world association Union Mondiale de Billard (UMB) led to parallel tournaments between 1994 and 1997. The UMB / BWA organized the tournament together until the beginning of 1999. Since the dissolution of the BWA in 1999, the UMB has been the sole organizer. From 1988-1991 the UMB did not host any world championships. During this time, the annual overall winner of the World Cup was crowned world champion.
