The three- cushion world cup 2008/5 was the fifth UMB / CEB world cup tournament in the 22nd year of the three-cushion world cup. The tournament took place from 16. – 22. November 2008 in the "Sunrise Garden Beach Resort" in Hurghada , Egypt . It was the fifth three-cushion World Cup tournament in Hurghada.

description

The defending champion (overall winner of the year) was the Swede Torbjörn Blomdahl . It was expected that number one and two in the world rankings, the Dutchman Dick Jaspers and the Belgian Frédéric Caudron, would make it difficult for the third-place defending champion. But it turned out differently. Both players were eliminated early, Jaspers in the round of 16 against the Italian Marco Zanetti and Caudron then a round later against Jean Paul de Bruijn from the Netherlands.

The 2006 world champion, Eddy Merckx from Belgium, managed a unique “clean series”. In the second round he beat the Austrian Gerhard Kostistansky , in the quarterfinals his compatriot and Blomdahl conqueror Jozef Philipoom , in the semifinals he met Caudron conqueror Jean Paul de Bruijn from Holland. In the final against the Spaniard and world champion from 1998 Daniel Sánchez it went against him and Sanchez won the tournament 3-0.

The wildcard player Peter de Backer from Belgium showed a very different kind of march . One after the other he beat the Greeks Filipos Kasidokostas , Jérémy Bury from France and Marco Zanetti. In the semifinals against the Spaniard Sánchez, de Backer was then disqualified from the tournament because of a positive doping result. The doping test was taken at the 2008 three-cushion world championship in St. Wendel. He was banned for two years with immediate effect. After a hearing on November 27, 2008, in which de Backer showed himself to be cooperative, the UMB reduced the sentence to two months, which ended on December 15, 2008. His personal situation and the fact that he was a first-time offender should be part of the decision also played a role. Nonetheless, the world ranking points he had won were stripped of him and he was sentenced to return all prize money. The only German participant in the finals, Martin Horn from Essen, benefited from this judgment . He received the world ranking points from de Backer and, despite his elimination in the semifinals, was rated as the bronze winner of the tournament.
