The three- cushion world cup 1998/1 was the third and final BWA world cup tournament in the twelfth year of the three-cushion world cup. The tournament took place from January 7th to 11th, 1998 in this discipline of carom billiards in Barendrecht . The tournament was still part of the 1997 World Cup. It was the first three-cushion World Cup tournament in Barendrecht.
In the last World Cup tournament of the year, Dick Jaspers secured the BWA Overall World Cup for the first time. It was again very close in the round of 16. Jaspers was already back 1: 2 sets against the highly talented Spaniard Daniel Sánchez . In the fourth set, Sánchez was already leading 11: 4. Then the Dutchman showed his mental strength and finished the set with the series of eight and three points and opened the final set with a series of eight and then won the match and thus the overall World Cup. It was the last time that an overall BWA World Cup was played. The defending champion Torbjörn Blomdahl won the World Cup tournament against Dion Nelin with a strong 3-0 win in the final. For the first time, third place was not played out at a BWA World Cup tournament. With Marco Zanetti and Sang Chun Lee there were two third places. The German Christian Rudolph had to end the tournament without a fight in the quarterfinals due to important short-term commitments in his home country.

The three-cushion World Cup was organized by the founding association, the " Billiards Worldcup Association " (BWA) until 1998 . Disputes between the BWA and the world association Union Mondiale de Billard (UMB) led to parallel tournaments between 1994 and 1997. The UMB / BWA organized the tournament together until the beginning of 1999. Since the dissolution of the BWA in 1999, the UMB has been the sole organizer. From 1988-1991 the UMB did not host any world championships. During this time, the annual overall winner of the World Cup was crowned world champion.
