Synagogue in Heppenheim

The synagogue in Heppenheim (Bergstrasse) , the district town of the Bergstrasse district in southern Hesse , was built between 1897 and 1900 and destroyed in the November pogrom in 1938 . The synagogue was on the corner of Bensheimer Weg and Herrmannstrasse.

history

The financing of the synagogue was taken over by the Hirsch brothers in London, who came from Heppenheim and owned a private bank. The synagogue was built according to plans by the architect Heinrich Metzendorf from Bensheim in a country house style, for which the architect was known. The entrance area with an open hall, stair tower and gable roof followed this style, which also includes the change in building material from quarry stone , stone and plastered surfaces. The synagogue was 20 meters long, ten meters wide and 17 meters high.

The synagogue remained in the possession of the Hirsch family. "Adolf Hirsch in London" was entered as the owner in the land register. After 50 years it was to become the property of the Jewish community of Heppenheim, on condition that the Jewish community of Heppenheim would continue to be subordinate to the Orthodox Rabbinate Darmstadt.

The synagogue was destroyed in the November pogrom in 1938 by SA men who burned it down. Jewish men were later forced to demolish the ruins.

Today there is a memorial on the property. A metal plate shows the outline of the synagogue, which was destroyed in 1938. It bears the inscription: The synagogue, built in 1900 and destroyed in 1938, stood here. On an additional board “In memory of the murdered” 29 names of former Heppenheim Jews are given. The Yad Vashem memorial in Jerusalem lists 52 Jewish victims of National Socialism who were born in Heppenheim or who lived for a long time. However, it may be that in some cases it was mixed up with people from Heppenheim an der Wiese .
