Di- n -pentyl phthalate is a chemical compound from the group of phthalic acid esters .

Extraction and presentation

The compound can be obtained by esterifying phthalic anhydride with n- pentanol in the presence of about 1% concentrated sulfuric acid as a catalyst.

Di- n -pentyl phthalate is a flammable, hardly inflammable, colorless to yellowish, odorless liquid that is very sparingly soluble in water. Some of the commercial products also contain larger amounts of the isomer diisopentyl phthalate.

Di- n -pentyl phthalate is used as a plasticizer for PVC.
