Career

Eko Yuli Irawan started lifting weights in 2001 in his hometown. He belongs to the Metro Lampung club . His first coach was Lukman. Since 2008 he has been trained by the Australian Rob Ballard.

Since 2006 he has participated in international championships with great success in both the junior and senior classes. Right at his first start at such a championship, the Junior World Championship in 2006 in Hangzhou , China , he finished in bantamweight with a duel of 269 kg (120-149) behind the Chinese Li Zhen , who came to 286 kg (131-155) , the 2nd place. In the same year, at the age of 17, he started at the Senior World Championships in Santo Domingo and came in 2nd place in bantamweight with 266 kg (116-150).

In 2007 Eko Yuli Irawan became world junior bantamweight champion in Prague . His duel performance there was 273 kg (120-153), with which he won because of the lighter body weight in front of the Chinese Wu Jingbao , who also achieved 273 kg (128-145). At the 2007 Senior World Championships in Chiangmai / Thailand , he increased the bantamweight to 278 kg (124-154), with which he behind the surprise winner Cha Kum Chol , North Korea , 283 kg (128-155) and the Chinese Li Zhen, 283 kg (130–153) took 3rd place. At the end of 2007 he won the Southeast Asian Games in Nakhon Ratchasima / Thailand in bantamweight with 284 kg (126-154) and thus achieved a performance with which he would even have become world champion in Chiangmai .

In the Olympic year 2008 Eko Yuli Irawan started at the Asian Championships in Kanazawa in featherweight and finished there with a very good 305 kg (135-170) in 2nd place behind Zhang Jie from China , who with 326 kg (147-179) a class was for himself. At the Olympic Games in Beijing , he trained again in the bantamweight. A measure that was worthwhile, because he achieved a new personal best as a bantamweight with 288 kg and won the bronze medal with it . In front of him were only Long Qingquan from China, with 292 kg (132-160) and Hoàng Anh Tu ausn from Vietnam , who achieved 290 kg (130-160).

In 2009 he finally switched to featherweight and won the title of junior world champion for the second time in this weight class in Bucharest . With his performance of 297 kg (136-161), he referred the Chinese Qiao Ningbo , who came to 292 kg (137-155), to 2nd place. At the Seniors World Championships in Goyang / South Korea in November 2009 , he gave the two favorite Chinese Yang Fan and Ding Jianjun a rousing fight. After trailing these two athletes in the snatch with 140 kg, he increased to an outstanding 175 kg in the push and was second winner in the duel with 315 kg behind Ding Jianjun, who achieved 316 kg and in front of Yang Fan, who came to 314 kg . With his performance in pushing, he won this individual discipline.

At the 2010 World Championships in Antalya Eko Yuli Irawan achieved 312 kg (140-172) in a duel. He came 4th behind Kim Un-guk , North Korea, Zhang Jie , China and Erol Bilgin , Turkey. One consolation for him was winning a bronze medal in pushing. At the 2011 World Championships in Paris he reached 310 kg (139–171) in a duel, coming in third behind Zhang Jie and Kim Un-gok. In pushing he secured a world championship silver medal weighing 171 kg.

At the 2012 Olympic Games in London, Eko Yuli Irawan increased to 317 kg (145-172) in a duel. He placed behind the towering Kim Un-guk, who achieved a new duel world record with 327 kg (153-174) and Oscar Figueroa, Colombia, who like him came to 317 kg (140-177), but was a few grams lighter when he finished 3rd, winning an Olympic bronze medal.
