Yevgeny Gavrilowitsch Minajew

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Evgeni Gavrilowitsch Minajew ( Russian Евгений Гаврилович Минаев , scientific transliteration Evgenij Gavrilovič Minaev ; born May 31, 1933 in Klin ; † around December 8, 1993 ibid) was a Soviet weightlifter .

Career

Yevgeny Minajew was active as a gymnast and athlete as a teenager, without being particularly noticeable. Only when he was drafted into the army did he try weightlifting because he was small, light, but already very strong. Weightlifting was particularly encouraged in the army. His first coach, who took a significant part in his development, was SD Bogdasarov. His first appearance at a major national championship took place in 1956 at the People's Partakiade of the Soviet Union. Although he only finished 4th in featherweight with 335 kg (up to 60 kg body weight), he was only 5 kg behind the winner Ivan Udodow . His nomination for the 1956 Olympic Games in Melbourne came as a surprise. But he fulfilled the trust placed in him and won the silver medal with 342.5 kg. In the following years he represented the Soviet Union at many international championships and fought many hot duels , especially with the American Isaac Berger . His greatest achievement was winning the gold medal at the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome .

After the end of his active career in 1966, Minajew turned down a position offered to him as a trainer at CSKA and instead made his way as a plumber in a pioneer holiday camp or a sports instructor in a collective farm . As a recipient of a monthly pension of just 100  rubles, he became impoverished and homeless during the collapse of the Soviet Union . He died at the age of 60 in his hometown of Klin.
