Central Sports Club of the Army

The Central Sports Club of the Army (ZSKA, ZSK, CSKA, CSCA or CWKS) is a sports club or sports club that was founded and operated by a member army of the Warsaw Pact . In addition to the central sports clubs, there were a few other army sports clubs (ASK, SKA, WKS) in several Eastern Bloc countries .

In the GDR, the army sports clubs had the additional designation "Forward" . The central army sports club was the ZSK Vorwärts of the KVP Berlin (Central Sports Club of the Barracked People's Police ), from which the ASK Vorwärts Berlin emerged, which eventually became the ASK Vorwärts Frankfurt . Like the other army sports clubs in the GDR , it belonged to the forward army sports association, which was subordinate to the NVA .

Well-known sports clubs that have carried or still carry the name ZSKA can be found among others. a. in Moscow and Sofia .

In Czechoslovakia and today in Slovakia and the Czech Republic , the army sports clubs are named Dukla after a pass north of Svidník on the Polish-Slovakian border. There the Red Army , supported by Czechoslovak troops, tried to cross the Carpathian Mountains in autumn 1944 and encountered fierce German resistance. About 46,000 soldiers died on both sides.

In Hungary the army sports clubs can be recognized by the name Honvéd , the name comes from fighters for the independence of Hungary.

In Poland , the army sports clubs were named Wojskowy Klub Sportowy (WKS) in front of the actual club name, while Legia Warsaw as the central sports club was named Centralny Wojskowy Klub Sportowy (CWKS) .
