Zaragoza is a municipality ( municipio ) in the Department of Antioquia in Colombia .

geography

Zaragoza is located in the north of Antioquia in the sub-region Bajo Cauca at an altitude of about 50  m above sea level. NN and has an average temperature of 26 to 29 ° C. It is located about 209 kilometers from Medellín on the Río Nechí . The municipality borders Caucasia in the north , Cáceres in the west , El Bagre in the east and Segovia and Anorí in the south .

The municipality of Zaragoza has 32,265 inhabitants, of which 14,614 live in the urban part (cabecera municipal) of the municipality (as of 2019).

history

Zaragoza was founded by Gaspar de Rodas on September 14, 1581 and was initially a center of gold mining in the region. The Spanish royal family sent a wooden figure of Christ to Zaragoza, which is still venerated today. Zaragoza was temporarily the capital of the then province and there was a historical rivalry with Santa Fe de Antioquia .
