Necocli is a municipality ( municipio ) in the Department of Antioquia in northern Colombia .

Necoclí is located in the north of Antioquia in the Urabá sub-region on the Gulf of Urabá , which belongs to the Caribbean Sea , 382 km from Medellín , at an altitude of 8  m above sea level. NN . The municipality borders on San Juan de Urabá and the Caribbean to the north, Turbo to the south, Arboletes and Turbo to the east, and the Caribbean to the west.

The entire municipality of Necoclí has ​​69,090 inhabitants, of which 17,135 live in the urban (cabecera municipal) and 51,955 in the rural part of the municipality (as of 2019). In Necocli members live the indigenous ethnic group of Tule .

history

When the Spaniards arrived, indigenous peoples of the Caribs lived in what is now Necoclí . The first Spanish conquistadors to land on the coast of the Gulf of Urabá were Rodrigo de Bastidas and Juan de la Cosa around 1501, who were only looking for gold and slaves. Alonso de Ojeda founded the first settlement in 1509 under the name Fuerte de San Sebastián de Urabá , which only existed until 1510. The next Spanish settlement in the area of ​​today's municipality was founded in 1535 by Pedro de Heredia under the name San Sebastián de Buenavista , which lasted until 1550. During the colonial period, all further attempts at conquest and missionary work were unsuccessful. Only in the 19th century was the region repopulated by non-indigenous people. In 1960 the place had 1120 inhabitants. Settlement intensified with the completion of a road in 1973. Since 1978 Necoclí has ​​had the status of a municipality. The growth was interrupted from 1987 to 1995 by guerrilla activities in the context of the armed conflict .

The main industry in Necoclí is agriculture , especially the cultivation of bananas , corn and cassava . Tourism , cattle production and fishing also play an important role.
