Apartado is a municipality ( municipio ) in the region of Urabá in the department of Antioquia in northern Colombia . The name Apartadó means banana river in an indigenous language .
geography
Apartadó is at an altitude of 25 m above sea level. NN 336 kilometers north of Medellín in the Urabá region near the Caribbean Sea . The municipality borders Turbo in the north, the Department of Cordoba ( Tierralta and Valencia ) in the east and Carepa in the south .
population
The municipality of Apartadó has 200,931 inhabitants, of which 174,550 live in the urban part (cabecera municipal) of the municipality (as of 2019).
history
The history of Apartadó goes back to the construction of a road connection to the Caribbean coast and the beginning of political persecution and displacement after the murder of the presidential candidate Jorge Eliécer Gaitán in 1948. Since 1967 Apartadó has had the status of a municipality.
economy
The main industry in Apartadó is agriculture . There are bananas , yuca , corn and cocoa grown. Cattle production , the timber industry and handicrafts also play a role.
Infrastructure
Apartadó has one airport, Antonio Roldán Betancourt Airport, which is located in the neighboring municipality of Carepa and from which there are mainly flight connections to Medellín.
