El Santuario is a municipality ( municipio ) in the Department of Antioquia in Colombia .

geography

El Santuario is located in the Oriente sub-region in Antioquia, 57 km from Medellín , at an altitude of about 2150  m above sea level. NN and has an average temperature of 17 ° C. At 75 km², El Santuario is the smallest municipality in eastern Antioquia. The municipality borders Marinilla and El Peñol in the north, Granada in the northeast , Cocorná in the southeast , El Carmen de Viboral in the south and southwest and Marinilla in the west.

The municipality of El Santuario has 27,316 inhabitants, of which 23,890 live in the urban part (cabecera municipal) of the municipality (as of 2019).

history

A pilgrimage site is said to have been located on the site of today's El Santuario as early as indigenous times. During the colonial period, a church in honor of the patron saint of Colombia, Nuestra Señora del Rosario de Chiquinquirá , was built on the same site , which also became a pilgrimage site. This was built in 1765, which led to the establishment of the place. Until 1838 El Santuario belonged to Marinilla , then it received the status of a municipality.

economy

The main industry of El Santuario is agriculture . In particular, carrots , potatoes , beetroot , white cabbage , peas , beans and corn are grown. There is also a textile industry in which more than 1200 people work directly.

tourism

El Santuario has two museums. The museum Museo Artístico Montecristo deals with the life of the santuarian actor and humorist Guillermo Zuluaga . The history museum Museo Histórico José María Córdova is dedicated to the life of the Colombian general José María Córdova , who died in El Santuario. Three churches can be visited, the churches of Nuestra Señora del Rosario de Chiquinquirá , San Judas Tadeo and Señor de las Misericordias . The Cascada El Salto waterfall is also nearby .
