The Basilica of St. Judas Thaddäus ( Spanish Basílica de San Judas Tadeo ) is a Roman Catholic church in the municipality of El Santuario in the Colombian department of Antioquia . The church of the diocese of Sonsón-Rionegro is dedicated to the apostle Judas Thaddäus and bears the title of a minor basilica . It was built in the neo-Gothic style at the beginning of the 20th century .

history

The idea of building the church goes back to the end of the 19th century when the veneration of St. Judas Thaddäus was practically unknown in America. In 1892 a large church was to be built in El Santuario as a vision for the future. There was a dispute among the population about the patronage, which was finally decided by lot. On May 11, 1898, the diocese of Medellin approved the construction. The work continued with interruptions until 1935, when the church was consecrated on August 24th that year. The equipment was completed in the following years. After the earthquake in 1962, repairs and reinforcements had to be carried out on the tower. In 1976, when the parish of Our Lady of the Rosary of Chiquinquirá was parish, the church became an independent parish. In 1989 the church was designated a sanctuary of the diocese. Pope Francis elevated the church to a minor basilica in 2017 .

architecture

The three-aisled , neo-Gothic basilica is 56 meters long and 20 meters wide. The central nave has a flat ceiling of almost 13 meters, the side aisles are 9 meters high, and the tower is 38 meters high.

Of great artistic value is the carved image of St Judas Taddhäus that is on the main altar and came from Barcelona , Spain in 1899 . Claver Ramírez created the large Stations of the Cross , which are 4.05 m high × 2.55 m wide. The paintings The Martyrdom of St. Jude and St. Cecilia also come from him .
