Turbo is a municipality ( municipio ) in the Department of Antioquia in northern Colombia . It is located on the Gulf of Urabá on the Caribbean Sea and is primarily known as a port city and border town to Panama , even if the border is 50 km to the northwest and there is no accessible connection to this country for cars or other motor vehicles (except off-road motorcycles).
geography
Turbo is located in the extreme northwest of the Antioquia department , 373 km northwest of the department capital Medellín . Turbo is the largest municipality in Antioquia in terms of area. The average temperature is 28 ° C. The municipality borders on Necoclí and Arboletas to the north, San Pedro de Urabá , Apartadó , Carepa and Chigorodó to the east, Mutatá to the south and Riosucio and Unguía to the west , both in the Chocó department .

population
The municipality Turbo has 176,813 inhabitants, of which 70,897 live in the urban part (cabecera municipal) of the municipality (as of 2019).
economy
Turbo is the center of northern Colombia's banana production , which is also shipped and exported here. Since this form of agriculture was booming for a long time, the population of the city grew very quickly, especially in the 1980s . This created so-called slums on the outskirts of the city . The majority of the population consists of Afro-Colombians .
The city is notorious as a metropolis of smuggling , as it is the closest port city to Panama. The smuggled goods are brought into the relatively confusing coastal areas of Panama in small ships or from there via Turbo to Colombia. This is also associated with a relatively high crime rate in the city.
Facilities
The most important migration office in northwest Colombia is located in Turbo. It is practically inevitable to visit the city if you want to enter Panama by the cumbersome land route, as you can only do the necessary formalities here. See also Darién .
In Turbo there is a location of the Universidad de Antioquia .
The Colombian second division soccer team Leones FC was based in Turbo in 2015-2016 and played its home games at the Estadio John Jairo Tréllez , which has a capacity of around 12,000 spectators. The club was previously located in Bello and Rionegro and known under the name Deportivo Rionegro . The club is the only one that has participated in all seasons of the Colombian second division. Leones moved to Itagüí in 2016 .
