Copacabana is a municipality ( municipio ) in the Department of Antioquia in Colombia and belongs to the de metropolitan Valle Aburrá , the metropolitan area of Medellín .
geography
Copacabana is located north of Medellín in the Valle de Aburrá in Antioquia and has an average temperature of 22.5 ° C. The municipality borders San Pedro de los Milagro in the north, Girardota in the west, Bello in the west and Medellín and Guarne in the south .
population
The municipality of Copacabana has 73,574 inhabitants, of which 64,428 live in the urban part (cabecera municipal) of the municipality. 3,952,494 people live in the metropolitan region (as of 2019).
history
The indigenous people of the Niquía lived in the area of today's Copacabana . The first Spaniards reached the Aburrá Valley in 1541. The place was initially a site of mines under the name La Tasajera . Since 1659 the place was a parish with the name Beneficio . According to an image imported from Copacabana , Bolivia , the place was finally renamed Nuestra Señora de Copacabana de la Tasajera in 1702 , of which only Copacabana remained.
