The metropolitan region of Valle de Aburrá describes the second largest metropolitan region of Colombia with ten surrounding municipalities ( municipios ), over which the urban area of Medellín extends de facto today . The Aburrá Valley is a valley of the Central Cordillera in northwestern Colombia, at an average altitude of about 1538 m above sea level. NN . Medellín is therefore also known as the Capital de la Montaña , "Capital of the Mountains".
The metropolitan region of Valle de Aburrá stretches over 70 kilometers from Caldas ( 1760 m above sea level ) in the south in a north-easterly direction to Barbosa ( 1300 m above sea level ) in the north. Thanks to the good location at this altitude, the temperatures rarely exceed 30 ° C and do not fall below 16 ° C. Due to this pleasant climate with an annual average temperature of 22 ° C, the valley with the capital Medellín is also known as the “City of Eternal Spring”.
