La Estrella is a municipality ( municipio ) in the Department of Antioquia in Colombia . It is located in the south of the Aburrá Valley and belongs to the metropolitan region of Medellín , the Área Metropolitana del Valle de Aburrá .

La Estrella is located in the sub-region of Valle de Aburrá in Antioquia at an altitude of 1775  m above sea level. NN 16 km from Medellín and has an average annual temperature of 20 ° C. The municipality has an area of ​​35 km² and borders on Medellín and Itagüí in the north, Itagüí and Sabaneta in the east, Caldas in the south and Angelópolis in the west .

history

Before the arrival and colonization of the Spaniards, the indigenous people of the Anaconas lived in the area of ​​today's municipality of La Estrella . The present place was founded in 1685 by order of the governor Francisco Carrillo de Albornoz under the name Nuestra Señora de La Estrella . In the place of the settlement there was already a village called Ancón .
