Yolombó is a municipality ( municipio ) in the Department of Antioquia in Colombia .

geography

Yolombó is located in the sub-region Nordeste in Antioquia 94 km from Medellín at an altitude of about 1450  m above sea level. NN and has an average temperature of 16 to 28 ° C. The municipality is bordered by Yalí and Amalfi in the north, Puerto Berrío and Remedios in the east, Gómez Plata and Santa Rosa de Osos in the west and Santo Domingo , Cisneros , San Roque and Maceo in the south .

history

Both the place and the name of the place Yolombó are of indigenous origin. The region was discovered for the Spaniards by Pedro de Heredia. The Spanish town was founded around the middle of the 16th century as San Lorenzo de Yolombó . The history of Yolombó is closely linked to gold mining . As long as a lot of gold was mined, the place prospered. When the deposits subsided, Yolombó lost its importance and was even administratively downgraded in the meantime in 1879 before it was again given the status of a municipality in 1883.

The main industries in Yolombó are agriculture ( sugar cane , coffee , cocoa , corn and beans ), animal husbandry (cattle and milk), as well as gold mining and the sugar industry.
