The Río Nechí is a 252 km long right tributary of the Río Cauca in north-central Colombia . The river flows through the Departamento de Antioquia .
River course
The Río Nechí rises at an altitude of about 2800 m in the Llanos De Cuivá , 17 km southwest of Yarumal . The headwaters are in the Central Cordillera , 70 km north of the city of Medellín . The Río Nechí initially flows mainly in a north-easterly direction through the mountains. It flows south past the city of Yarumal. 6 km southwest of Zaragoza , the Río Porce , the main tributary, meets the Río Nechí from the south. This then turns to the north. The river passes the cities of Zaragoza and El Bagre . At El Bagre the Río Tigüí meets the river coming from the southwest. This finally flows into the Río Cauca opposite the city of Nechí .
Hydrology and catchment area
The Río Nechí drains an area of around 14,500 km². In the west the catchment area borders on that of the Río Cauca , in the east on that of the Río Magdalena . The mean discharge at the mouth is 830 m³ / s.
Water quality
The water quality of the Río Nechí is considered poor. The river is very rich in sediments . Mercury and other heavy metals are found in water. Industrial wastewater from the Medellín agglomeration enters the river via the Río Porce. In addition, mining is carried out in the catchment area of the Río Nechí.
