from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Francesco Paolo Augusto "Frank" Calì (born March 26, 1965 in New York City , New York ; † March 13, 2019 on Staten Island , New York) was an American mafioso and at the time of his murder the boss of the Gambino family .

Life

Early years

Frank Cali's parents - Augusto Cali and Agata Cesare - come from Palermo in Sicily , where his father ran a household goods store.

Augusto Cali ran a video store in Bensonhurst and was a partner of Domenico Adamita, who in turn was a close friend and business partner of Mafia boss Gaetano Badalamenti . He played a key role in organizing the infamous Pizza Connection in the 1980s . Despite this connection, Augusto Cali was never investigated, so his criminal record remained clean.

Frank Cali was the nephew of John , Joseph and Rosario Gambino .

Criminal career

Cali's criminal career began as a teenager working as an errand boy for Mafia greats like John D'Amico and John Gotti on 18th Avenue in Brooklyn . In the late 1990s, Frank was promoted to capo . According to mafia expert Jerry Capeci, Cali became the new underboss of the Gambino family in October 2012. Capeci had previously reported that Domenico Cefalu has become the family's new boss. Both Cefalu and Cali belonged to the Sicilian faction. In July 2013, Cali was supposed to be the new boss of the family, which he refused on his own initiative. In August 2015, Frank Cali became the new boss of the family after his predecessor, Cefalu, offered his position due to his age.

On March 13, 2019, Cali was shot at least six times in front of his home on Staten Island and then run over by a pickup truck . He died in hospital that same day.
