Domenico "Italian Dom" Cefalu (* around 1947 in Sicily ) is a mobster and was the head of the Gambino family in New York City .

biography

Cefalu was born in Sicily. After moving to the United States, Cefalu smuggled heroin in New York City for the Gambino mafia family . In 1982 he was convicted of drug smuggling and was imprisoned for six years. In 1991 he was accepted as a full member of the family by Gambino boss John Gotti . Cefalu was a member of the Sicilian "Zip" crew , headed by Caporegime Pasquale Conte , based in Queens and Brooklyn ( Zip is an American slang term for Italian-born mafiosi due to their fast-paced Sicilian language).

In 1992, a New York court questioned Cefalu as a witness in the Conte trial. After a few questions he refused to give evidence. The judge sentenced him to 18 months in prison for disobeying the court. On February 23, 1993, Cefalu was brought to court to testify again in the Conte trial, but refused again. On February 6, 1994, he was released from prison. On the same day he was charged with failing to testify in the Conte trial; In 1996 he was sentenced to 33 months in prison.

In 2008, Cefalu was arrested as part of Operation Old Bridge and charged with extortion and conspiracy on February 7, 2008 . Operation Old Bridge was a coordinated action by the Italian and American police, directed against Italian and American gangsters and primarily against the Gambino family. Cefalu was sentenced to 33 months in prison. On November 3, 2009, he was released from prison. He then lived in Brooklyn with his mother. He also worked as a baker on the side.

In July 2011, Cefalu became the boss of the Gambino family. His rise is seen as a return to the old tradition of Cosa Nostra . He replaced Peter Gotti , who had been the boss of the family since 2002. In 2015, Cefalu resigned; The new boss was Frank Cali , who had previously been underboss, until his murder in March 2019 .
