geography

Bensonhurst is bounded by Gravesend to the southeast , Midwood to the east, Borough Park to the north, Dyker Heights to the west and Bath Beach to the southwest.

history

Bensonhurst derives its name from Arthur W. Benson . He was the former president of Brooklyn Gas and began buying farmland from the Polhemus family in 1835.

Demographics

In the early 20th century, the neighborhood was a destination for poor Jewish and Italian immigrants. Until World War II , the split between Jewish and Italian Americans was around 50-50. In the 1950s the demographic composition changed and more southern Italian immigrants came to Bensonhurst. This led to more and more Jews leaving this district. Bensonhurst became Brooklyn's Little Italy. The 18th Avenue is one of the main shopping area and includes many small Italian family businesses that have for several generations of family ownership.

Chinese, Albanians, Arabs, Mexicans and residents of the former Soviet Union have also immigrated since 2000.

The opening of Chinese stores gave the impression of a miniature Chinatown in some streets.
