Irwin Chanin
Irwin Salmon Chanin (born October 29, 1891 in Bensonhurst , Brooklyn , New York City , † February 24, 1988 in Manhattan , New York City) was an American architect .
Life
Irwin Salmon Chanin was born the son of a Jewish-Russian immigrant in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn. He lived in Russia in his youth before returning to the United States in 1907. In 1915 he graduated from Cooper Union with a degree in civil engineering and founded The Chanin Construction Company with his brother Henry in 1919 . While Henry was acquiring the orders , Irwin designed Art Deco buildings in Manhattan such as the Chanin Building , the Richard Rodgers Theater , The Century and The Majestic over the next few years .
Irwin Chanin married Sylvia Schofler in 1921, who died in 1976. He himself was survived by two sisters, three children, 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
