Oksen Mirsojan ( Armenian Օքսեն Միրզոյանն ; born June 11, 1961 in Angeghakot , Sissian Oblast ) is a former Soviet or Armenian weightlifter . He was an Olympic bantamweight champion in 1988 .

Career

Oksen Mirsojan started lifting weights as a teenager in Armenia . After initial successes in the national field, he was delegated to Spartak Yerevan and later to Dynamo Yerevan . At a height of 1.55 meters, he usually started in bantam weight (class up to 56 kg body weight (KG)) and a few times also in featherweight (class up to 60 kg body weight). In the Soviet national team, in which he was accepted in 1982, Alexander Prilepin was his coach.

He made his first start on the international weightlifting stage in 1980 at the Baltic Cup in Bollnäs / Sweden . He reached 235 kg in the bantamweight duel and was second behind Frank Mavius from the GDR , who scored 262.5 kg.

1982 Oksen Mirsojan was the first time Soviet champion in bantamweight with the duel load of 270 kg (120-150). In the same year he was used at the World and European Championships in Ljubljana , where he took second place in bantam weight with 272.5 kg (120–152.5) behind Anton Kodschabaschew from Bulgaria , who weighed 280 kg (125 kg) -155) came.

In 1983 he achieved a great success, because he became world and European bantamweight champion in Moscow. He mastered it in a duel 292.5 kg (127.5-165) and defeated it Naim Suleimanow , from Bulgaria , who achieved 290 kg (130-160). That was the last defeat of Suleimanow, who later went to Turkey and made a great career as Naim Suleymanoglu .

1984, on the other hand, was an extremely bad year for Oksen Mirsojan. He could not compete in the Soviet championship because of an injury. Recovered, he started at the European Championships in Vitorio / Spain in the bantamweight division. In an effort to keep up with Naim Suleimanow, he obviously selected his initial weight with 122.5 kg too high in the snatch, because he could not handle this load three times and was therefore eliminated without a valid duel result. He could not take part in the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles because of the boycott of these games by the Soviet Union . Instead he could only take part in a tournament of the so-called socialist states in Varna , in which he scored 132.5 u. 133 kg set two new world records.

In 1985 Oksen Mirsojan was not in the form of 1983, but he finished in bantamweight both at the European Championships in Katowice with 270 kg (117.5–152.5) and at the World Championships in Södertälje / Sweden with 280 kg ( 122.5–157.5) in the duel behind the Bulgarian Neno Tersiiski the 2nd place. Tersiiski won in Södertälje only because of the lower body weight with the same performance (280 kg) against Mirsojan.

Also in 1986 Oksen Mirsojan won two medals in a duel. At the European Championships in Karl-Marx-Stadt ( Chemnitz ) he achieved 280 kg (120-160) and thus took 2nd place behind Neno Tersiiski, who came to 285 kg (122.5-162.5) and in the World Championship in Sofia he reached with 285 kg (125-160) behind Mitko Grablew , Bulgaria, 290 kg (127.5-162.5) and He Yingqiang from China , 287.5 kg (127.5-160) the 3rd. Space.

At the Soviet championship in 1987 Oksen Mirsojan started for the first time in featherweight. He achieved in this weight class in a duel 305 kg (132.5-172.5) and had to admit defeat to his Armenian compatriot Jurik Sarkisjan , who came to 307.5 kg. These two athletes started for the Soviet Union at the 1987 World Championships in Ostrava . Oksen Mirsojan again achieved 305 kg (135-170) in a duel, taking 3rd place behind Stefan Topurow from Bulgaria, 315 kg (140-175) and Jurik Sarksijan, 307.5 kg (137.5-170).

1988 Oksen Mirsojan went back to the bantamweight and was with 290 kg (125-165) for the third time Soviet champion. He did not take part in the European Championships in 1988, but concentrated entirely on the Olympic Games in Seoul . This concentration was worth it, because he was Olympic champion in Seoul with 292.5 kg (127.5-165) ahead of the two Chinese He Yingqiang , 287.5 kg u. Liu Shoubin , 267.5 kg. That was without a doubt the greatest success of his career. It should be noted here that the Bulgarian Mitko Grablew was actually in front of him, but was disqualified in Seoul for doping.

In the following years he took part in the Soviet championships and won in 1991 in bantamweight with 277.5 kg (127.5-150) the fourth championship title, but started for the Soviet Union in no more international championships.

After Armenia became an independent state after the collapse of the Soviet Union , he started again for his home country in 1993 in the featherweight division at the World Cup in Sofia. He achieved there in a duel 280 kg (125-155), which was only enough for 6th place.

After this championship he ended his weightlifting career. He became a businessman in Yerevan and took over the training of the Armenian national weightlifting team, which was being rebuilt. Later he was also president of the Armenian Weightlifting Association for several years. Since around 2005 he has been working as a voluntary trainer in a sports school in Yerevan , taking care of over 60 young weightlifters. His main focus, however, is on the training of his son Arakel Mirsojan , who has also become a weightlifter and in 2009 became European lightweight champion.
