Wu Shude
Wu Shude ( Chinese 吳 數 德 / 吴 数 德 , Pinyin Wú Shùdé ; born September 18, 1959 in Nanning , Guangxi Autonomous Region ) is a former Chinese weightlifter . He became the 1984 Olympic bantamweight champion.
Career
Wu Shude began lifting weights as a teenager in 1973 in a sports school in Nanning. Because of his good progress in 1977 he moved to the Guangxi provincial team. He was very light and always started with a height of 1.54 meters in the bantamweight, the weight class with a limit of 56 kg body weight.
His career on the international weightlifting stage began in 1978 with a partial failure, because at the Junior World Championships in Athens he achieved a new junior world record with 102.5 kg in the flyweight division and with this result also became Junior World Champion in But he made three unsuccessful attempts in pushing, so that he remained unplaced in the overall standings without a duel result.
1979 Wu Shude was in Debrecen in flyweight with 227.5 kg (107.5-120) vice world champion at the junior world championship and was in the same year at the world championship of seniors in Saloniki at the start. He finished there in the flyweight duel with 237.5 kg (110-127.5) in 5th place, but managed the feat with his performance in the individual discipline of tearing 110 kg to become the first Chinese world champion among seniors. It became obvious that, unlike the previous Chinese world-class athletes, who mostly had their strength in pushing, he was a specialist in snatching.
In 1980 Wu Shude became the Chinese flyweight champion. The result of this duel is not known. But his performance in snatching is known: 112 kg, which meant a new world record. In the course of 1980 he switched from flying to bantamweight due to weight problems. In this weight class he achieved at an international tournament in Shanghai in a duel of 255 kg (117.5-137.5) towards the end of 1980 . He was unable to take part in the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow because China boycotted these games because of the political differences that existed between China and the Soviet Union during those years .
In 1981 Wu Shude was Asian bantamweight champion in Nagoya and on this occasion set up a new world record in snatching on August 16, 1981 with 126.5 kg. At the World Championships that year in Lille he came in bantamweight to 257.5 kg (117.5-140), with which he finished 5th. In 1982 he was the winner of the Asian Bantamweight Games in New Delhi in front of the two North Koreans Jang Eui-Jung u. Chang Jeh-Wan. The performances of these championships are not known. At the 1982 World Cup in Ljubljana , he won a medal in a duel for the first time, the bronze one. He achieved 270 kg (125-145) and only had to let Anton Kodschabaschew from Bulgaria , 280 kg (125-155) and Oksen Mirsojan from the USSR , 272.5 kg (120-152.5) pass him.
At the 1983 World Cup in Moscow , where Chinese athletes competed in the Soviet Union for the first time in many years , Wu Shude came in bantamweight with 265 kg (125-140) in 5th place. The winner there was Oksen Mirsojan from the USSR with 292.5 kg (127.5-165) in front of the Bulgarian Naim Suleimanow, 290 kg (130-160).
In 1984 We Shude was able to seize the opportunity at the Olympic Games in Los Angeles . Since most of the Eastern Bloc countries boycotted these games for political reasons, a bantamweight duel of 267.5 kg (120-147.5) was enough for him to win the Olympics in front of his compatriot Lai Runming , 265 kg and Masahiro Kotaka from Japan , 252 , 5 kg.
After these Olympics, he ended his career as an active weightlifter. He became a coach and lives in his native city of Nanning.
