Alexander Nikiforowitsch Voronin ( Russian Александр Никифорович Воронин ; born  May 23, 1951 in Chelyabinsk , Russian SFSR , Soviet Union ; † September 26, 1992 in Mysky , Kemerovo Oblast , Russia ) is a former Soviet- Russian weightlifter . He became Olympic flyweight champion in 1976 .

Athletic career

At the age of 10, Alexander Voronin and his family moved to Mysky in Kemerovo Oblast . At the age of 19, Voronin began to train as a weightlifter.

At the XXI. At the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal , Voronin won a gold medal ahead of the Hungarian György Kőszegi and the Iranian Mohammad Nassiri . Voronin repeated his own world record set on December 4, 1975 of 242.5 kg (105.0 kg / 137.5 kg).

At the 1977 World Championships in Stuttgart , Voronin became world champion, setting a new world record with 247.5 kg (107.5 kg / 140 kg).

From 1976 to 1980 Voronin was four times European champion.
