Ivan Iwanow ( Bulgarian Иван Иванов ; born August 27, 1971 in Shumen ) is a former Bulgarian weightlifter .

Career

Ivanov first appeared on the international stage in 1989 and immediately won the 1989 World Cup in Athens in flyweight up to 52 kg with a result of 272.5 kg in a duel against He Zhuoqiang from China . This also meant the European Championship for Ivanov, since these competitions, as was often done in the past, were held in one competition.

In 1990 Ivanov won the European Championship, the Junior World Championship and the world championship in his class. In 1991 Iwanow had to admit defeat to Hafiz Süleymanoglu and Victor Sinyak at the European Championships in Władysławowo , but at the World Championships in Donaueschingen he was able to increase to 272.5 kg in a duel and took first place in front of his compatriot Sewdalin Mintschew . At the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona , the reigning European champion was able to secure the gold medal with his last attempt in jerking. He gained 265.0 kg in a duel, the runner-up Lin Qisheng 262.5 kg.

To change the classes in 1993, Ivanov stayed in the flyweight, which now had 54 kg as an upper limit. In 1993 Ivanov was able to win the European Championship and the World Cup, but in 1994 in Istanbul he had to admit defeat to the up-and-coming Halil Mutlu , who relegated him to second place with 290.0 kg to 275.0 kg. Ivanov was in 1995 runner-up European champion with 277.5 kg behind Mutlu, but at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta , Ivanov, after two invalid attempts in snatching and also only one valid attempt in pushing, was able to bring in only 257.5 kg in the rating and he placed 6th. The winner was again Mutlu with 287.5 kg.

After Ivanov did not take part in international competitions in 1997, he won the European championship in bantamweight up to 56 kg in 1998 , since flyweight was now abolished and the class boundaries were changed again. Mutlu did not appear at this European Championship, but at the World Championships in Lahti , whereupon Ivanov landed with 282.5 kg in 3rd place behind Mutlu and Lan Shizhang from China. In 1999, Ivanov's performance in the hard-fought class was enough for the bronze medal at the European Championships and for fourth place at the World Cup.

In 2000 he won the Vice European Championship one last time with 282.5 kg behind Mutlu with 300.0 kg. At the Olympic Games in Sydney in 2000 Ivanov gained 10 kg and with 292.5 kg first came second behind Mutlu with 305.0 kg. But Ivanov was subsequently disqualified for doping and his medal was revoked . Furosemide could be detected in his sample .

After his playing days, Ivan Ivanov worked as a coach. He was u. a. active in Egypt and Iran . During his time as a trainer in these countries, weightlifters were found doping in several cases at international events.
