Daniel Núñez (born September 12, 1958 in Santiago de Cuba ) is a former Cuban weightlifter . He became Olympic champion in 1980.

Career

Nunez's international career began at the age of 17 when he was first used for the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal in the national team . He achieved a flyweight of up to 52 kg 215.0 kg (92.5 / 122.5 kg) in a duel and finished eighth with this performance. For the 1977 World Cup in Stuttgart, he switched to the bantam weight up to 56 kg. Here he immediately won gold in a tear. In the duel, however, 242.5 kg (112.5 / 130.0 kg) was only enough for sixth place. The winner was the Japanese Jiro Hosotani with 252.5 kg.

At the 1978 World Championships in Gettysburg , however, he also had a good performance in pushing, and won his first world title in a duel with 260.0 kg (117.5 / 142.5 kg). A year later he was able to win the Pan American Championships in bantamweight, the 1979 World Cup in Saloniki he finished fourth with 260.0 kg (115.0 / 145.0 kg).

At the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow, Nunez increased his performance to 275.0 kg (125.0 / 150.0 kg) and won gold in front of Jurik Sarkisian with 270.0 kg and Tadeusz Dembończyk with 265.0 kg. The games also represented the world championships for the Olympic year, with which Nunez also won the world championship title in snatch and duel, and came second in pushing.

With the start of the new Olympics, Nunez took part in the 1981 World Championships in Lille in featherweight up to 60 kg. With 135.0 kg in snatch he won another world title, in jerking he was runner-up with 167.5 kg and the 302.5 kg achieved in a duel placed him behind Beloslaw Manolow , who was also 302.5 kg, only because of his higher body weight raised.
