Chun Byung-kwan (born November 4, 1969 in Jinan , Jeollabuk-do Province ) is a former South Korean weightlifter . He was the 1992 Olympic bantamweight champion.

Career

Chun Byung-kwan started lifting weights as a teenager. He developed extremely quickly and took part in a senior world championship in 1986 as a 17-year-old high school student. He started in Sofia in flyweight and achieved in a duel 240 kg (107.5-132.5), with which he took 6th place. Just one year later, at the world championship in Ostrava , he won his first medal at a senior world championship. He managed to push 135 kg there and won the bronze medal with this performance. In a duel, he came back to 240 kg (105-135), which reached 4th place there.

Now a student in Seoul , he qualified for the 1988 Olympic Games in that city. He managed to increase his duel performance to 260 kg (112.5–147.5) and with this performance he won the Olympic silver medal behind the Bulgarian Sewdalin Marinow , who achieved 270 kg (120–150) and referred the Chinese He Zhuoqiang , 257.5 kg (112.5–145) to 3rd place.

In 1989 Chun Byung-kwan was in Fort Lauderdale / Florida with 275 kg (120-155) junior world champion in bantamweight ahead of Albert Nasibulin from the USSR , who came to 270 kg and Luo Jianming , People's Republic of China , 267.5 kg (122, 5-145). He achieved the same duel performance in 1989 at the Senior World Championships in Athens . There this performance was only enough for 5th place. With his performance in pushing 155 kg, he won the World Championship silver medal in this discipline.

In 1990 he won the Asian Games in Beijing in the bantamweight division, relegating Liu Shoubin and Luo Jianming, the two favored Chinese, to places 2 and 3. The Chinese then returned the favor at the World Cup in Budapest , where Liu Shoubin won with 285 kg (130-155) before He Yingqiang , 285 kg (125-160). They left Chun Byung-kwan with 277.5 kg (122.5–155) only 3rd place, which was still a great success for him.

Chun Byung-kwan achieved an even greater success at the 1991 World Cup in Donaueschingen . With an enormous increase in performance to 295 kg (130-165), to which the Chinese Liu Shoubin , who achieved 292.5 kg (135-157.5), forced, he was the first world champion in the duel and in jerking the bantamweight. A year later he also triumphed at the Olympic Games in Barcelona . There he achieved in the bantam weight 287.5 kg (132.5-155), with which he was superior to Liu Shoubin, who was in poor shape in Barcelona and only 277.5 kg (130-147.5), and Luo Jianming , who also came to 277.5 kg (125-152.5), won the gold medal. In the exuberance of his Olympic victory, Chun tried to hit a world record twice with 170 kg after having pushed 155 kg, but failed twice.

In 1993 there was a weight class reform by the international weightlifting association. The bantam weight, which had its weight limit of 56 kg until 1992, now reached a body weight of 59 kg. As a result, the previous bantamweights either had to work off into the flyweight, which went up to 54 kg from 1993, or, if they couldn't do that, had to compete in the new bantamweight against former featherweights who had to train from 60 kg to only 59 kg had to be able to start in bantamweight. Chun Byung-kwan decided to start in the weight class up to 59 kg in the future. At the World Championships in Melbourne in 1993 , he managed in this class in a duel 292.5 kg (130–162.5) with which he came in 4th place and behind the former featherweights Nikolaj Peschalow , Bulgaria , 302.5 kg (135– 167.5), Hafis Suleymanoglu , Turkey , 295 kg (135-160) and Tang Lingsheng , China, 292.5 kg (130-162.5) remained.

1994 Chun Byung-kwan won again at the Asian Games, which took place in Hiroshima . He stayed in bantamweight ahead of Tang Lingsheng and Hiroshi Ikebata, from Japan . at the World Championships in Istanbul he reached the 4th place again with 287.5 kg (127.5-160). In 1995 he celebrated another great success at the World Championships in Guangzhou , because he was runner-up there with his personal best of 300 kg (135-165) behind Leonidas Sabanis from Greece , 302.5 kg (137.5-165) - Featherweight world champion.

At the end of his career, he started again at the Olympic Games in Atlanta . After 135 kg in the snatch, he made three failed attempts in pushing with 165 kg and twice with 167.5 kg, so that he remained unplaced without a duel. Despite the unfortunate outcome of this competition, Chun Byung-kwan can look back on an extremely successful career.

Since the end of his career, he has been featured frequently as an expert on sports programs on Korean television, and is popular with audiences for his expert and humorous commentary.
