Career

Tadeuasz Dembończyk comes from Tarnowskie Góry in Silesia . He started lifting weights there as a teenager. His discoverer and first coach at the Slaskie Tarnowskie Góry sports club was Tadeusz Psiuk. At a height of 1.55 meters, he started in bantam or featherweight. He was a member of the Army during his weightlifting career. In the Polish national team of weightlifters he was a. a. trained by Klemens Roguski and Jan Bochenek .

His international career began in 1975 when he took part in the Junior World Championship in Marseille , the first ever World Championship for this age group to take place. He managed there in bantamweight in a duel 240 kg (107.5-132.5) and was with this performance junior world champion before Chepin from the Soviet Union , 227.5 kg and Frank Mavius , GDR , 225 kg.

In 1976 he took part in the European Senior Championships and took 5th place in Berlin in bantamweight with 235 kg (105-130). For participation in the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal , he could not qualify. There Leszek Skorupa and Grzegorz Cziura represented the Polish colors in the bantamweight division.

In 1977 Tadeusz Dembończyk started at the World and European Championships, which took place in Stuttgart . In the bantamweight he achieved 245 kg (110-135) and came in 4th in the World Championship and 2nd in the European Championship. World champion was Jiro Hosotani from Japan with 252.5 kg and European champion Georgi Todorow from Bulgaria with 247.5 kg.

At the European Championships in 1978 in Havířov Tadeusz Dembończyk increased in a duel to 252.5 kg (112.5-140), but still only came in 4th place. The winner there was his compatriot Marek Seweryn , who reached 260 kg. At the world championship of the same year in Gettysburg , USA , he made three failed attempts in the tear, which left him unplaced without a duel result. In the push, however, he came to 142.5 kg and thus won the World Cup silver medal in this sub-discipline .

Tadeusz Dembończyk achieved a new personal best in a duel at the 1979 European Championships in Varna . He achieved there in the bantam weight 260 kg (115-145) and was thus behind Anton Kodschabaschew , Bulgaria , 262.5 kg, vice-European champion. In the tearing sub-discipline, he even won the European title with 115 kg. He was also very successful at the 1979 World Championships in Saloniki , where he again scored 260 kg (117.5–142.5) in a duel, winning behind Anton Kodschabaschew, 267.5 kg and the like. Viktor Veretennikov , USSR, 262.5 kg the bronze medal in the World Cup. In snatching he even became world champion with 117.5 kg.

In the 1980 Olympic year he was only at the Olympic Games in Moscow. He decided not to start at the European Championships in Belgrade in order to be able to prepare well for the Olympic Games. This measure proved to be correct, because he achieved in Moscow in bantam weight with 265 kg (120-145) again a personal best and won the Olympic bronze medal in a duel. In the sub-discipline tear he won the silver medal in the world championship with 120 kg. Olympic champion was Daniel Núñez from Cuba with 275 kg in front of Jurik Sarkisjan from the USSR with 270 kg.

After that he did not start at any international championships. He developed alcohol problems as he grew older and died in 2004 at the age of 49.
