from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

István Kovács (born June 27, 1950 in Nádudvar , Hajdú-Bihar County ) is a former Hungarian wrestler . He was world champion in 1979 freestyle middleweight.

Career

István Kovács started wrestling as a teenager and after his initial successes was delegated to the top Hungarian club Csepel SC . There he developed into one of the best freestyle wrestlers in Hungary, who also received many successes on the international wrestling mat. In Hungary he was initially in the shadow of the veterans Géza Hollósi and Károly Bajkó , but from 1972 he determined the events in the Hungarian freestyle wrestling in the middleweight division.

From this point on he started regularly in the international championships, always in the middleweight division, the weight class that at that time reached up to 82 kg body weight. He made his debut at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich . There he only managed to win over the Canadian Taras Hyb and retired early after defeats against Tömöriin Artag from Mongolia and the Leipzig Horst Stottmeister . He ended up in 14th place.

His best placement in the years after 1972 he achieved with a 4th place at the European Championships in 1974 in Madrid . At the 1975 World Cup in Minsk , he came in 7th place. He was u. a. also Adolf Seger from Freiburg im Breisgau , who won the title at this world championship. In 1976 he came in 5th place at the European Championships in Leningrad after another defeat against Adolf Seger. This year he took part in the Olympic Games in Montreal for the second time and finished there in 7th place after two wins and two losses.

In 1977 István Kovács won his first medal at an international championship. He finished 3rd in the middleweight championship in Lausanne behind Adolf Seger and Magomedchan Arazilow from the Soviet Union . Interestingly, he helped Adolf Seger to the world title with his completely surprising victory over Arakilow in the last fight of the middleweight competition. For István Kovács this victory was meaningless, because he would have finished third without this victory, but for Arakilow, who had defeated Adolf Seger, the defeat meant the loss of the world title.

In 1978, István Kovács just missed a medal both times with a 5th place at the European Championships in Sofia and a 4th place at the World Championships in Mexico City . At both events he lost u. a. Again against Adolf Seger.

The most successful year of his career for István Kovács was 1979. He won the European Championship silver medal at the European Championships in Budapest with five wins and one defeat against the Soviet athlete Alexander Alexejew. For the first time, he also succeeded in defeating Adolf Seger. At the 1979 World Cup in San Diego he was even more successful, because with victories over Ismail Abilow from Bulgaria , Magomedchan Arazilow, Michael Busse from Poland and Dzewegiin Düwtschin from Mongolia , he was despite a defeat against 1972 Olympic champion John Peterson from the United States World champion .

In 1980 he only started at the Olympic Games in Moscow . Although he achieved five wins there, he lost the decisive battles for the award of medals against Ismail Abilow and Magomedchan Arazilow. But he still won the bronze medal .

After a 6th place at the 1981 World Cup in Skopje , he ended his international career. But he struggled even further at the national level and, as a thirty-five-year-old, still fought successfully for AC Bavaria Goldbach in the German Bundesliga for a few years .
