Magomedchan Suleymanovich Arazilov

Magomedchan Suleimanowitsch Arazilow ( Azerbaijani Maqomedxan Aratsilov ; born May 7, 1958 in Churuk , Dagestani ASSR , Russian SFSR ) is a former Soviet wrestler . He won the silver medal at the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow and became world middleweight champion in free style in Mexico City in 1978 .

Career

Magomedchan Arazilow, an Azerbaijani (according to other sources, Aware ) grew up in Baku and began wrestling there as a teenager. He developed into an excellent freestyle wrestler very early on. His coach in Baku was Ayub Mamedow. Although he was already one of the best Soviet middleweight freestyle wrestlers at the age of 17, he was never used in international championships in the youth field. At the age of 17 he was sent to the renowned Werner Seelenbinder tournament in Leipzig , where he made an excellent debut at the international with a 2nd place in the middleweight division behind Vasile Iorga from Romania but ahead of the Germans Günter Spindler , Klaus Girke and Adolf Seger Wrestling mat was there.

In 1976 he won a well-manned World Cup tournament in Toledo / USA in front of the American Greg Hicks. In 1977 Magomedchan Arazilow was then used for the first time at the Senior World Championships in Lausanne . He became runner-up world champion after losing to the Hungarian veteran István Kovács on points. In 1978 Magomedchan Arazilow finished second in the Soviet championship behind Anatoli Markowitsch and in front of Grigori Danko. He was nevertheless nominated for the world championship in Mexico City and won the world title in middleweight there. In 1979 Magomedchan Arazilov celebrated great successes against strong competition, especially in the Soviet Union. He was first Soviet middleweight champion in front of Anatoly Markowitsch and Pawel Potapenko and then won the Spartakiad of the Peoples of the USSR . In 1980 Magomedchan Arazilov was able to qualify for the Olympic Games in Moscow . He celebrated five wins in his first five fights in Moscow and also defeated Istvan Kovacs. In the final battle he was defeated by Ismail Abilow, who was in top form, and had to be content with the silver medal .

After his time as an active wrestler, Magomedchan completed a coaching education and was coach of the Soviet national team of freestyle wrestlers from 1985 to 1992. Currently (as of April 21, 2008) he is the national coach of Azerbaijan . Among other things, he trains Çamsulvara Çamsulvarayev , who took 3rd place at the 2008 European welterweight championship.
