The Dagestani ASSR ( Russian Дагестанская АССР ; Dagestani Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic ) was an autonomous Soviet republic in the Russian Soviet Federal Socialist Republic (RSFSR) within the Soviet Union . It was in the Caucasus in the southern part of Russia . It existed from 1921 to 1991. The capital was Makhachkala . Since the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, the area has been a federation of Russia as the Republic of Dagestan . The region has significant deposits of oil , natural gas , coal and sulfur and important ports on the Caspian Sea. The population is made up of numerous peoples, including Avars , Lesgians , Dargins , Kumyks , Azerbaijanis and Russians.
