Reşit Karabacak

Reşit Karabacak (born June 7, 1954 in Erzurum ) is a former Turkish wrestler and European champion in free style in 1983 in the middleweight division.

Career

Reşit Karabacak began as a teenager with the Turkish national sport of oil wrestling . It was not until he was 19 years old that he began to practice Olympic wrestling in 1973 in Izmir . His coach there was Muharren Atik, who came to Turkey from Bulgaria in 1971 . During his career, in which he was active in free style, he also belonged to the sports clubs Tofas "Sas Spor" Külübü and Ankara "TEDAS" Külübü.

Reşit was first used in 1974 at an international championship, the European Championship in Madrid . He just missed the medal ranks in the lightweight with a 4th place. After a 6th place at the 1976 European welterweight championship in Leningrad , he was able to celebrate his first major success in 1977 with second place at the European championship in Bursa . He defeated Dan Karabín from the ČSSR and Alexander Nanew from Bulgaria. Only the Soviet athlete Peter Marta turned out to be stronger.

Also at the world championship of the same year Reşit u. a. against the multiple world champion Ruslan Aschuraliew from the USSR, but had to be content with the 4th place after defeats against Günter Busarello from Austria and Stanley Dziedzic from the USA .

1978 Reşit won again a medal at the European Welterweight Championships in Sofia . He won u. a. also against Gerald Brauer from the GDR and Jancho Pavlov from Bulgaria. After a long unsuccessful time, he surprisingly won the Middleweight Championship in 1983 in Budapest . With Josef Lohyna from the Czechoslovakia, Efraim Kamberow from Bulgaria and Georgi Makarasaschwili from the USSR he defeated three top wrestlers.

At the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles , Reşit injured himself in the first fight against Mark Schultz from the USA and had to give up. Finally he won a bronze medal in the light heavyweight division at the European Championships in Leipzig in 1985 and in Tampere in 1987 .

In his career, Reşit Karabacak ensured the specialty that he rose from lightweight (up to 68 kg body weight) to light heavyweight (up to 90 kg body weight) and always found himself at the top in his new weight class. After the end of his active career, Reşit became a coach.
