In 1977 he was used for the first time at an international championship, the European championship in Bursa, Turkey . He started there in the welterweight division and came in a good 5th place. He finished 5th at the 1980 European Championships in Prievidza , where he also managed to beat the strong Turkish Reşit Karabacak .
In 1981 he reached 3rd place at the European Championships in Łódź, the first medal win at an international championship. A success that he was able to repeat in Varna the following year . In 1981 he also achieved the best placement at a world championship with a 5th place. In Skopje he won it a. a. about the top Japanese wrestler Akira Ōta and the experienced Hungarian István Kovács , who was one of Adolf Seger's toughest opponents in the late 1970s .
Peter Syring completed his international career with a 4th place at the European Championships in Jönköping . At this championship his victories over Josef Lohyna from Czechoslovakia and Lukman Jabrailow from the Soviet Union were particularly noteworthy. In the fight for the medals, however, he lost against the German champion Reiner Trik .
Peter Syring ended his international wrestling career in 1985, but could still be seen on the national level for a few years on the wrestling mat and after the political change in the GDR after 1990 he also started for KSV Aalen .
