Career

Willibald Liebgott started wrestling at ASV Bruchsal. There he developed into his outstanding freestyle wrestler, who soon moved to the Bundesliga club KSV Aalen . Later he was also on the mat for the North Baden club AV Reilingen and for KSV Wiesental. Willibald has already won several German championship titles in the youth and junior division. In 1974 he won (at the age of 18) his first medal in the senior middleweight division behind Adolf Seger from Freiburg and Bernhard Dunke from Efferen . Liebgott won his first German senior title in 1977 in the light heavyweight division.

Willibald Liebgott's international career was influenced by the fact that between 1975 and 1980 he competed in Adolf Seger, one of the world's best freestyle wrestlers, in his weight class, the middleweight division. He therefore had to move to the next higher weight class, the light heavyweight division, in which Peter Neumair from Hallbergmoos played a similar dominant role as Adolf Seger in the middleweight division.

Nevertheless, Willibald Liebgott came to some appearances at international championships and was able to achieve some quite good placements. However, he did not win medals at world and European championships. The best result he achieved was a very good 5th place at the 1982 European Championships in Varna . He also took 6th place in the light heavyweight division at the 1977 European Championships in Bursa and the 1979 European Championships in Bucharest .

With the AV Reilingen, Willibald Liebgott celebrated a great success in 1982 when they managed to win the German team championship against the high favorites KSV Witten 07. In 1985 he also won the German team title with KSV Wiesental. Willibald Liebgott learned the trade of butcher and later became a contract soldier.
