Fred Hempel

Fred Hempel (born June 12, 1951 in Ramsin ) is a former German wrestler and winner of the bronze medal at the 1976 European Championships in Leningrad in the free style welterweight.

Career

Fred Hempel began as a teenager with rings . Because of his talent, he was soon delegated to SG Dynamo Luckenwalde , where he developed into an excellent freestyle wrestler who was already one of the best wrestlers in the GDR in his respective weight class in the youth and junior sector . As early as 1969, at the age of 18, he took 3rd place in the welterweight division of the senior citizens of the GDR championship and in 1971 won his first GDR championship title in the same weight class.

From 1972 Fred Hempel was also used regularly at international championships. It was not until 1975 that he managed to convince with a 4th place at the European Championships in Ludwigshafen am Rhein and a 5th place at the World Championships in Minsk , both in the welterweight division. In 1976 Fred Hempel won the bronze medal at the European Championships in Leningrad with third place . On the way there he defeated such good wrestlers as Jancho Pavlov from Bulgaria , Reşit Karabacak from Turkey and others. Marin Pârcălabu from Romania . Fred also showed very good fights at the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal . He initially celebrated three wins, but then met the Iranian Mansour Barzegar and the Japanese Jiichirō Date , to whom he lost. These defeats were not a shame for him, because it was the wrestlers who won the gold and silver medals.

In 1977 Fred Hempel played his last international championship. At the World Championships in Lausanne he won a. a. against Dan Karabín from the CSSR , but lost again against Mansour Barzegar and also against Jamtsyn Dawaadschaw from Mongolia . He finally finished 8th.

After this world championship, Fred Hempel ended his international wrestling career and worked as a trainer. He completed a university degree as a sports scientist and worked from 1980 to 1991 first as a junior trainer and later as a senior trainer at SG Dynamo Luckenwalde and in the GDR national team. From 1991 he worked as a trainer for the DRB at the Luckenwalde federal base and as an assistant trainer for the national freestyle team. Also since 1991 he coached the 1st Bundesliga team of the 1st Luckenwalder Sport Club, whose marketing he took care of from 2001 as managing director of "Nelson" Sport GmbH. Fred Hempel is one of the most successful trainers in Germany. He trained successful freestylers such as Karsten Polky and Heiko Balz . With him as head coach, the 1st LSC became German team champion in 2006, a success that the club was unable to build on in the following season after Fred Hempel's departure.

Fred Hempel is married and has three daughters.
