Daniel Santon Robin (born May 31, 1943 in Bron ; † May 23, 2018 in Montreal ) was a French wrestler .

Career

Daniel Robin grew up in Grenoble . He began there 14 years ago with the rings . With many successes in the youth field in the province of Dauphiné / Savoy , he made the leap into the French national wrestling team at the age of 18. At the age of 19 he took third place in the French lightweight championships in Colmar in the Greco-Roman style. A year later he was the first French champion in lightweight, this time in free style. Until the end of his career, which was to be very successful, Daniel Robin always excelled in both styles. After he achieved a promising success with a fifth place in the lightweight, Greco-Roman style, in his first international assignment in 1963 at the World Championships in Helsingborg , he was stopped after three wins by Klaus Rost from Witten , he had to stand in the next few years satisfied with weaker results at the World and European Championships. Until 1966 he was always fighting for the lightweight. In 1967 he switched to the higher weight class welterweight and did not need to train so much in this weight class. Great successes were promptly achieved. He became world champion in New Delhi in 1967 in Greco-Roman style, in 1968 European champion in Skopje in free style and in 1968 won a silver medal in both styles at the Olympic Games in Mexico City . In the free style he was defeated by the Turkish Mahmut Atalay in the final and Rudolf Vesper from Rostock in the Greco-Roman style . In the following years he was only able to win a victory at the 1971 Mediterranean Games in Izmir . At World and European Championships and at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich , however, he still achieved many good placements among the six best wrestlers in a weight class. He fought against German wrestlers with different results. He lost to Klaus Rost from Witten, Werner Schröter from Schifferstadt and Rudolf Vesper from Rostock, won over Reinhard Zeiher from Brötzingen , Bernd Müller from Halle, Fred Hempel from Luckenwalde and Klaus Pohl from Halle (Saale) . His greatest victories were without a doubt those over the Soviet world-class wrestlers Yuri Shachmuradow and Guliko Sagaradze . The individual results of all international championships that he contested can be found in the section "International successes".

After the Olympic Games in 1972 Daniel Robin finished his career as a wrestler. He initially worked in France as a journalist and in 1968 was a member of the Organizing Committee for the Olympic Games in his hometown of Grenoble. He then went to Canada for many years and worked as a television and radio reporter for Radio Montreal , where he worked in the sports sector. In 1996 he returned to France. He then held leading positions in the international wrestling federation FILA and was vice-president of the French wrestling federation.

He was inducted into the FILA International Wrestling Hall of Fame in August 2012 for his services to wrestling .
