Career

Yuri Shachmuradov began wrestling as a teenager. He concentrated on the free style. After he had drawn attention to himself through successes in the national field, he was delegated to a wrestling center in Makhachkala in Dagestan , where he was trained by Ilya Drajew. At a height of 1.75 meters, he started as a lightweight, but grew in the course of his career over the welterweight into the middleweight.

In 1966, Yuri Schachmuradow was used for the first time at an international championship, the European championship in Karlsruhe. He started in the welterweight division and won the title with victories over Marek Grob, Poland, Reinhard Zeiher , West Germany, Károly Bajko , Hungary and Turan Aladschikow, Bulgaria and a draw against Mahmut Atalay , Turkey.

On the way to this success he wrestled again in his first fight against Mahmut Atalay and then defeated Turan Aladschikow, Osvaldo Ferrari, Italy and Károly Bajko. In the final accounts he had one missing point less than Mahmut Atalay.

At the World Championships in 1966 and 1967, Guliko Sagaradze represented the Soviet colors in the welterweight division. This took second place at both world championships.

In 1968 Yuri Shachmuradow became Soviet welterweight champion and was therefore able to compete for the Soviet Union at the Olympic Games in Mexico City. In this tournament he won over Mukhtiar Singh from India, Brian Heffel from Canada and Angel Sotirow from Bulgaria. In the 4th round he was shouldered by Daniel Robin from France and in the 5th round he wrestled against Tatsuo Sasaki from Japan. So he had more than the permitted number of 6 fault points and had to be eliminated. In the final accounts he came in 6th place.

After a weight class reform by the world wrestling federation FILA, he competed in the middleweight class from 1969. He was in this weight class at the European Championships in Sofia at the start. In Sofia he won the European title for the third time with victories over Jimmy Martinetti , Switzerland, Vahit Uysal, Turkey, Horst Stottmeister , GDR, Vasile Iorga , Romania and Károly Bajko. At the World Cup he was again not used.

He convinced there completely and won the title with victories over Jan Wypiórczyk , Poland, Jim Gouws, United States, Horst Stottmeister and Iwan Iliew , Bulgaria, a draw against Tatsuo Sasaki and a win over Vasile Iorga.

After that, Yuri Shachmuradov was no longer used in any international championship. In the Soviet Union, the Georgian Levan Tediaschwili dominated the action in his weight class from this point on . Yuri Shachmuradow studied sports science and graduated with a doctorate. He then became a coach in the Soviet Union and in Russia. For many years he was the head coach of the Russian women's national team and led many Russian women wrestlers to great international success. Natalia Vorobjowa , who became Olympic champion in London in 2012, is an example .
