Ion Țăranu

Ion Țăranu (born March 14, 1938 in Turnu Măgurele ) is a former Romanian wrestler . He won the bronze medal in Greco-Roman at the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome . Middleweight style .

Career

Ion Țăranu began wrestling as a teenager and developed into an excellent wrestler in Greco-Roman. Style. In 1959 he was the first Romanian middleweight champion. In 1960 he qualified for participation in the Olympic Games in Rome . He had only gained international experience in two international matches against Sweden in Bucharest . He fought twice against Hans Antonsson .

In Rome he surprised the wrestling world when he showed excellent performance in the middleweight division and there defeated the Turkish world champion Kazim Ayvaz . Against the young Lothar Metz from Rostock , who represented the all-German team, he wrestled in a draw. Ion Țăranu suffered a defeat from the experienced Dimitar Dobrew from Bulgaria . In the final bill it was enough for him to get 3rd place and thus to win the bronze medal .

Ion Țăranu also did very well at the 1961 World Cup in Yokohama . There he again fought against Lothar Metz, but lost to the Soviet athlete Wassili Zenin and landed on the ungrateful 4th place. Ion Țăranu won no medals at the World Championships in 1962 in Toledo / USA and in 1963 in Helsingborg . But he cut both times there from respectable and failed at both World Championships to Anatoly Kolessow from the USSR.

Well prepared, Ion Țăranu drove to the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo . He wrestled there in the welterweight division and remained undefeated in his four fights. However, the draw against Matti Laakso from Finland and Anatoli Kolessow let him reach six fault points after two point wins, with which he had to be eliminated from the competition. He finished 5th.

Ion Țăranu then achieved a great success at the European Championship in 1967 in Minsk . There he became vice European welterweight champion. The rules of the time made it possible for him to do so with just one win and three draws. At this year's World Cup in Bucharest , he got three wins and one draw. A defeat against Viktor Igumenow from the USSR forced him to retire, after which he ended up on the 6th place.

In 1968 Ion Țăranu took part in Mexico City for the third time in the Olympic Games . Like four years ago, he reached 5th place. He defeated u. a. Peter Nettekoven from Dortmund and fought against Franz Berger from Austria in a draw. He suffered defeats from Viktor Igumenow and the French Daniel Robin .

After the Olympic Games, Ion Țăranu ended his active wrestling career. He studied at the sports university ANEFS in Bucharest and received his doctorate there in 1971. He then worked there himself as a lecturer and later as a professor. In addition, he also trained the wrestling teams of Progresul Bucharest and Dinamo Bucharest .
