history
There are remains of a Roman bridge over the Danube, which Constantine the Great had built in 330. The city name means "mountain tower" and refers to the tower of a defensive wall of a fortress built by the Byzantine ruler Justinian I in the 6th century . Ruins of this are still there today.
Turnu was ruled by the Ottomans from 1417 to 1829 , at the opposite Nikopol the Turks defeated a Hungarian-French-Romanian crusader army in 1396 and conquered the areas south of the Danube.
