Turnu Fortress (Romania)
Turnu fortress

The fortress Turnu , Romanian Cetatea Turnu (alternative names : Nicopolis minor , Kule , Holavnik ) was a medieval fortress in Turnu Măgurele , in Teleorman County in the Wallachia region in Romania .

Geographical location

The remains of the Turnu fortress are located in the southern part of Turnu Măgurele, three kilometers from the city and one kilometer from the confluence of the Sâi River with the Danube .

description

The fortress was built during the reign of Mircea the Elder . The first documentary mention comes from the year 1394, when the Hungarian King Sigismund fought against the Turks in Nicopolis .

The fortress was part of the Danube fortresses and was supposed to defend Wallachia against the Turks. At the end of the reign of Mircea the Elder, it came under Ottoman occupation until Wallachia took possession of it in 1829. During the Russo-Turkish War of 1829 , it was burned down and demolished.

The fortress consisted of a central round tower (from which the fortress was named: Turnu = tower ) with a diameter of 17.4 meters and three surrounding walls that united to the south. The first wall was equipped with several bastions , which were later covered by the rebuilding of the wall. The entire ensemble was built in a swampy area.

The building is part of the list of historical monuments in Teleorman County and has been rehabilitated on behalf of the towns of Turnu Măgurele and Nikopol since October 2018.
