Carceri di Sant'Ansano

The Church of the Carceri di Sant'Ansano (Prison of Saint Ansanus) is in Siena , in Via San Quirico.

History and description

The name of the church derives from the legend of St. Ansanus , according to which the missionary from Siena was imprisoned in the second half of the 3rd century in the stone tower that still stands next to the church from the 12th / 13th centuries. Century stands. It has been documented since 1441 that the church was used as an oratory by the Contrada della Tartuca until 1663.

Above the portal are fragments of a fresco of the Madonna and Child between Saints Ansanus and Catherine of Siena by Francesco Rustici , called " Rustichino ". On the brick facade, which has undergone various changes, there is a round stained glass window from the mid-17th century depicting the titular saint and the heraldic insignia of the client, Cardinal Bishop of Siena Antonio Casini (1409–1427).

Important documents of the decoration of the 15th century are the two frescoes on the left wall of the interior. Other interesting artistic evidence goes back to the beginning of the 17th century: the altarpiece of the high altar that depicts the trial of Saint Ansanus before the court in Lisia , carried out by Rustichino , and the wall paintings by his father, Vincenzo Rustici, depicting God the Father and represent the Annunciation .

The church delle Carceri is now owned by the Opera della Metropolitana . It is normally closed to the public, but is opened every year on the morning of December 1st for the feast of the Holy Martyr Ansano, the patron saint of Siena.
