Zimnicea (formerly Simnitza ) is a small town in the Romanian district of Teleorman on the border with Bulgaria .
Geographical location
Zimnicea is the southernmost city of Romania. It is located around 2 km north of the Danube across from Swishtow .
history
The oldest Geto - Dac fortress in Great Wallachia (5th to 6th centuries BC) is located near Zimnicea . The place is now an archaeological excavation site.
In the Russo-Ottoman War (1877–1878) , the main Russian army crossed the Danube at Zimnicea and, after a hard fight, drove out the weak Turkish army.
In March 1977, 80% of the city was destroyed by a major earthquake . The reconstruction took place in the following years.
